Whale of a Tale

We went to Kauai for winter break. It was great. Amazing, really. The beach is a destination AND an activity. It’s also the edge of the world before it all turns to parrotfish poop. I digress.

I have a weird tendency to run into celebrities toward the end of the year. Not sure why this is, but no such luck this year — although I did see Kevin Costner in the lobby of our hotel. He was wearing flip flops, jorts, a white Go-Go’s t-shirt, and a cowboy hat. It wasn’t a bad look. Somehow he made the jorts work. But I digress again.

The woman came back with our drinks; Virgin Mudslides and a Mai Tai.

“Here you go,” she said handing them one by one to Pam.

“Hey,” I said as Pam stole a sip of mine. “That’s not YOUR Tai. That’s MY Tai.”

“Ha,” said the woman. “I’ve been working here for three years and I’ve never heard that one. Very clever.”

Not sure if she hadn’t served a lot of dads, or this was a cunning strategy. Either way, she did well when I closed our tab.

My pun was a B/B+ at best so there was probably a dearth of dads staying at the Sheraton and its beautiful beachfront property. I didn’t get my love of puns from my dad. (Unrelated — literally — I probably got it from my Uncle Tommy.) But my dad loves the beach. He loves being weightless in the water and seeing…
