Lesson Learned

Friendships are hard to explain. They are usually born organically. But I know they happen over time and stem from having things in common. Proximity and age are a factor. By default, they need to be nurtured and kept up. Sometimes they need a lot of water, sometimes just a drop. I have friends from when I was in first grade. I have friends currently in the making. Grabbing lunch with a dude on Wednesday. But I digress.

Judah, my son, often has difficulty establishing/understanding friendships. It seems like it should be pretty straightforward, but kids these days with their extracurricular activities, after school programs, and global pandemic strains.

Judah’s 9. I can’t really make out what 9yos talk about or how they make friends. I try to pay attention when I pick him up from school. The other day it was freezing. I saw a couple of boys take their coats off as soon as they busted out the door and hit the icy blacktop. They tore past me and I heard the one say to the other, “C’mon, man! We’re bad boys! Let’s be bad boys!” I thought that was a poor decision but remarkably self-aware. Of course, that’s not how Judah rolls. That much I know. He’s interested in traffic cones, airbags, and general safety. His current love is the flight simulator app on the iPad.
