For Those About to Rock…
Judah has taken various music classes over his almost 9 years. Mostly social interaction stuff and play, but all with an emphasis on music — because he LOVES music. His teachers (different ones from different programs) have pulled Pam and I aside to suggest Judah might have perfect pitch. Neither Pam or I knows what this means. We just nod and say, “Oh, cool.” And follow up with, “Well, he doesn’t get it from his parents.”
I know I can sing along with something in the car. I might get 6 notes out of 10, but enough to put me in the ballpark that you would know what song I’m singing. Judah, though. You know exactly what song.
So we enrolled him in School of Rock for singing. He meets with a teacher once a week for 45 min, and then he meets with a band (an ensemble of age-related kids and a couple of instructors) on another day for 90 min and rocks out.
When I dropped him off for the trial class, they asked the parents to show up an hour later and sit for a mini-concert. So I joined 7 other adults in front of a small stage and watched a rando child band stumble through ‘Radioactive’ by Imagine Dragons. It’s a simple enough song in which the instructor pretty much carried everyone. Judah was on keyboards poking at an ivory or two and singing. I noticed he was always too early, that he wasn’t listening. And that’s when it hit me like an 80 inch gong…
